Harvard Earns Win in Week's Lone ECACHL Contest; Plenty of Non-Conference Games Also Contested
League Now Leads Commissioners' Cup Series
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Harvard led the ECAC Hockey League's charge last week, winning its fourth and fifth games in a row. The Crimson won the lone league game of the week and now sits in first place and also claimed a non-conference victory, to give the ECACHL the lead in the Commissioners' Cup Series. Clarkson also had two good games, taking three points from the No. 8 team in the land.
Harvard continued its hot streak last Tuesday with a mid-week contest vs. Vermont and earned a 3-1 win. The game snapped the Catamounts' 11-game unbeaten streak and moved the Crimson up one spot to first in the league standings. Crimson made it nine wins out of 10 games on Saturday night with a decisive 4-1 victory over Maine. Depending on the poll, UVM and the Black Bears were ranked 10 and 11 in the nation. A major factor in the two wins, and the Crimson's hot streak, is goalie Dov Grumet Morris. The senior netminder was outstanding in both games last week and stopped a total of 61 shots over the two contests. For his efforts, he was named the league's Player and Goaltender of the Week. Freshman Jon Pelle was also an important contributor, factoring in with a goal and an assist vs. the Black Bears and was named the league's Rookie of the Week.
Clarkson snapped a five-game losing skid and claimed its first win in nearly a month when it tied and beat No. 8 Ohio State at Cheel Arena over the weekend. Senior Jay Latulippe tied the game on Friday and then followed up with two assists on Saturday to lead the Golden Knights. The team's defense was also at the top of its game, holding the Buckeyes to just six shots in the final period of play and not letting the first shot on goal until 7:30 left to play in the game.
Other non-conference victories last week included a 4-3 win by Rensselaer over Providence last Wednesday and a 5-1 win by Union over Wayne State on Friday.
Scott Romfo netted the winner for the Engineers with under six minutes to go in the third period. For the Dutchmen, Olivier Bouchard led the way in the win with a goal and two assists, while Jordan Webb also had three points with three helpers.
This coming week is fairly quiet, with most teams on break for exams. Of the four games on the slate, just one is a league contest, with Vermont traveling to Dartmouth for a 2 o'clock game on Sunday afternoon. In non-conference action, St. Lawrence will play host to Lake Superior State for games Saturday and Sunday, and Colgate has an exhibition vs. Ottawa on the 18th.
